Human-in-the-Loop (HITL): Definition and How Approval Gates Work

Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a design pattern where an AI system pauses at a defined checkpoint and waits for a human to review, edit, or approve an action before it goes out — rather than acting fully autonomously.
Why it matters
AI systems are good at drafting, researching, and pattern-matching at speed. They're worse at judgment calls with real consequences: is this email going to the right person, does this response commit the company to something it shouldn't, is this the right tone for this specific relationship. HITL is how a business gets AI's speed without handing over judgment it hasn't earned yet.
It also matters for trust. A business that lets AI send emails, post content, or make commitments unsupervised is one bad output away from a reputation problem. A human checkpoint on the actions that matter is cheap insurance against that.
