Northline Studio

A site that carries the work, without shouting over it.

Northline Studio needed a portfolio that felt as considered as the design inside it. We rebuilt their positioning, tightened the case structure, and shipped in three weeks.

Northline Studio is a small creative agency with genuine craft behind their work. Their old site was functional but forgettable: the kind of template that could belong to anyone. Prospects saw the work but didn't feel it. Enquiries were inconsistent. The site wasn't keeping pace with the studio's reputation.

The challenge

Good work, undersold.

Northline's portfolio had the right projects. It just didn't have the right story around them. Visitors landed, scrolled through a grid of images, and left without a sense of what the studio stood for or how to engage.

The briefs were buried. The process wasn't mentioned. The contact page was a form with no personality. Three weeks before a pitch to their biggest potential client to date, they came to us.

The brief was clear: make the work feel as intentional as it is, and make it obvious what to do next.

Our approach

Positioning before pixels.

01

Discovery & narrative

We spent the first two days asking questions, not about the site, but about the studio. How do you describe your work to a new client? What's the project you're most proud of, and why? What do you wish prospects understood before the first call? The answers became the foundation for every page.

02

Information architecture

We restructured the site around how creative directors actually decide, not by browsing a portfolio grid, but by understanding a studio's point of view first. Work came second to the why. Case studies were restructured around outcomes, not just aesthetics.

03

Visual direction

Restrained, editorial, and intentional. The design needed to step back and let the work breathe, while still feeling considered. Generous whitespace, a tight type system, and a single accent that tied the whole thing together.

04

Build & launch

Next.js, Tailwind, and clean component architecture so the team can update case studies without touching code. We shipped to staging by end of week two, iterated on copy with the founder in a shared doc, and went live on day 21.

The build

Fast without cutting the corners that matter.

The front-end was designed for longevity: components that are easy to extend, a CMS-ready structure, and performance that doesn't degrade as the portfolio grows. Every interaction was considered: hover states, page transitions, image loading.

100%Of the pitch panel commented on the site during the meeting

Three weeks after launch, Northline won the pitch. Their creative director told us the panel had the site open during the meeting. They've since hired two new people and are booked out four months ahead.

What the client said
We needed a portfolio that didn't feel like every other studio theme. They pushed us on narrative, not just layout, and the build quality is something we trust to represent us.
